Tartar in dogs and cats

Tartar is mineralised plaque, underneath which inflammation of the periodontal tissues develops.

Most common possible causes

  • Plaque
  • Diet and eating habits
  • Crowded teeth
  • Age and breed

When it's urgent

  • Pain while eating

What diagnostics may be needed

  • Examination
  • Radiography
  • Periodontal probing

Under the tartar there may be pockets and bone loss that are only visible on X-rays. The exact cause can only be established after an examination and any necessary diagnostics.
