Cat grooms less: possible dental causes

Reduced grooming is sometimes linked to pain when moving the jaw and tongue. There may also be bad breath, drooling, refusal of dry food or avoidance of touch.

Most common possible causes

  • Tooth resorption (TR)
  • Gingivitis or periodontal disease
  • Chronic gingivostomatitis
  • Broken tooth

When it's urgent

  • Complete refusal of food
  • Drooling
  • Irritability when touched

What not to do at home

  • Don't put changes down to age alone without an examination

What diagnostics may be needed

  • Examination
  • Full-mouth dental radiography
