Symptoms

Why are my dog's gums bleeding?

Owners sometimes notice mild bleeding while chewing only late on. It's often the first visible symptom of gingivitis or periodontal disease.

Gingivitis and periodontal disease

Plaque turns into tartar, which inflames the gums. Blood shows up on toys, chews and in the bowl after eating.

Other possible causes

Trauma from hard objects, a diseased tooth, and, less often, systemic conditions. The exact cause is determined at examination.

What the vet does

Professional cleaning, treating pockets, X-rays if needed. Home brushing helps after treatment, but doesn't replace it.

When to see a vet

  • Gum bleeding happens regularly
  • There's bad breath or visible tartar
  • The dog avoids chewing or hard food

What not to do at home

  • Don't consider bleeding "normal for dogs"
  • Don't brush aggressively over bleeding gums
  • Don't delay a visit because the symptom seems "mild"

Frequently asked questions

It reduces plaque, but doesn't remove tartar below the gumline. If there's active bleeding, an examination comes first.

By itself, it's a sign of inflammation. Left untreated, it can progress to periodontal disease.
