A broken tooth in a dog or cat

Exposed dentine or pulp is painful and becomes a gateway for infection. Many teeth can be saved with endodontic treatment.

Most common possible causes

  • Playing with hard toys
  • Trauma
  • Enamel defects

When it's urgent

  • Severe pain
  • Swelling
  • Refusing food

What not to do at home

  • Don't put off an examination just because "it doesn't seem to hurt"

What diagnostics may be needed

  • Examination
  • Dental root radiography

Only the crown is visible from the outside. An X-ray shows the condition of the pulp and bone. The exact cause can only be established after an examination and any necessary diagnostics.

How treatment may proceed

  • Vital pulpotomy
  • Root canal treatment
  • Extraction where indicated
