Retained temporary teeth in a puppy or kitten
Persistent temporary teeth mean the permanent tooth has erupted while the temporary tooth remains. You may see two teeth side by side or a double row. This can cause crowding, early plaque and trauma to the gums or palate. Bite assessment is needed; temporary teeth are extracted when indicated.

Most common possible causes
- —Delayed shedding of temporary teeth
- —Breed predisposition (more common in small breeds)
- —Crowding and malocclusion
When not to postpone an exam
- ✓A double row of teeth
- ✓Trauma to soft tissues or the palate
- ✓Malocclusion
- ✓The permanent tooth has already erupted while the temporary tooth remains
What not to do at home
- —Do not pull temporary teeth out yourself
What diagnostics may be needed
- ✓Bite examination
- ✓Dental radiography when needed
Sometimes the temporary tooth root is retained out of sight — this shows on dental radiographs.
