Urgent situations

Can a diseased tooth cause swelling under the eye?

The root of the upper canine sits close to the eye socket. Infection can spread and cause swelling under the eye, which is sometimes mistaken for other conditions.

The anatomical link

Infection in the root of the upper canine can form an abscess that shows up as swelling under the eye, on the bridge of the nose, or on the cheek.

What to look out for

Swelling under the eye, one-sided nasal discharge, bad breath, and darkening of the canine on the same side.

Treatment

X-rays, assessment of the tooth, root canal treatment or extraction — it depends on diagnostics. Antibiotics alone, without treating the tooth, don't solve the problem.

When to see a vet

  • Swelling under the eye or on the face has appeared or is increasing
  • There are dental problems alongside it — odour, a darkened canine
  • The pet is lethargic, not eating, or has a raised temperature

What not to do at home

  • Don't treat only "the eye" or "the nose" without examining the teeth
  • Don't give antibiotics without a plan to treat the tooth
  • Don't delay a visit — an abscess can progress

Frequently asked questions

Not always, but a dental cause is common with one-sided swelling. The vet will carry out diagnostics.

They can reduce symptoms temporarily, but without treating the tooth, the infection often returns.
